Chuck Hebing Captures Second Straight SDW Sprint Car Challenge Title
Elbridge, NY – October 7, 2007 – Rich Vleck, ASCS Patriot Sprint PR
Two years in a row, the seventh day of October has proved to be fruitful for Chuck Hebing, as he completed a successful 2007 season with his 14th win of the year.
The 2007 ASCS Patriot Sprint Champion led all 25 laps for the second straight year Sunday to pick up the $3,000 top prize, in an event that had the A and B Features held over from a rain-soaked Saturday Night Program.
With 67 sprint cars initially checking into the pits, there were plenty of contenders that could factor in the feature, but in the end it was a familiar cast of characters that were up front with “The Cobra”.
Sophomore sprint competitors Jason Barney and Steve Poirier each had their cracks as Hebing over the closing stages but came up just shy of the fellow former modified regular.
“This is always such a tough show, so we knew we had to work hard for this one,” said Hebing in Victory Lane after climbing down from a top his snake-skinned wing. “I knew (Barney) was going to run the bottom so I just had to hope I could get back around him.”
On a lap six restart, Barney had his best opportunity to move around Hebing when he hit the mark on the bottom of turn two and pulled even with the current benchmark of Northeast sprint car competition.
On the ensuing restart on lap 13, Barney had to restart behind the lapped car of Mares Stellfox, who slowed up Barney enough to allow Steve Poirier to move his No. 28fm into second. It was then the turn of the 2007 ESS Champion to track down “Cobra”.
Poirier closed within two car lengths on the final lap but when Hebing saw a nose wing peak underneath him, the No. 45 pulled back to a comfortable distance. It seemed as if Poirier would cross in second; but in the final set of corners of the season, Poirier would suffer problems.
Poirier’s last-ditch ever pitched his car out of shape, sending the No. 28fm spinning. At the same time as his spin, Mares Stellfox had also spun out, just in front of Poirier, forcing him to stop the car and restart at the tail of the field.
Chuck Hebing’s win was his fifth in a row at the Rolling Wheels Raceway, including all three 360-sprint races at the 5/8-mile facility in 2007. His winning streak dates back to June of 2005, something that surprises even the Ontario, NY driver.
“It’s funny how when I used to run here with the modified and was terrible,” said Hebing. “We have just hit on something here that allows me to go anywhere I need to on the track.”
Speaking of modifieds, Big Block Modified’s biggest event, the Rite Aid 200, was run earlier in the day with Jason Barney placing in ninth after leading for 25 laps. At night, he would finish second after 25 laps.
Barney, who carries an anti-cobra decal on his No. 87, was hunting down the leader for much of the event but untimely cautions and lapped cars would cost the Constantia, NY a chance to win his first race at Rolling Wheels.
Barney was the winner of Heat No. 1 on Saturday, when he picked up the Tully’s Good Times Restaurants Good Time of the Night Award for laying down an average lap of 17.65 at 127.479 mph.
The 1-2 finish for Hebing and Barney bookends the 2007 Rolling Wheels Schedule, which kicked off back on May 6 when they were the top-two in the ASCS Patriot event.
Blake Breen made it an All-ASCS Patriots Podium, making a last-lap pass to score a third place finish at one of his hometown tracks. Breen started in eighth after swapping out motors Sunday Afternoon after burning a piston on Saturday, and used an effective high line around the spacious facility to equal his best finish of the year.
Curt Michael recorded his second-consecutive top-five in the Super DIRT Week Sprint Challenge, placing his No. 99 in fourth.
Tim Kelly had to postpone and then cancel his family vacation due to the inclement Saturday weather, but made it worth it as he scrambled his way inside the top-five at Kenny Marshall’s double-checkered flags, concluding Super DIRT Week XXXVI.
Bryan Howland charged from the B-Main to place sixth at his hometown track. Jessica Zemken was seventh from her B-Main to remain perfect in top-10 finishes at “The Wheels”.
Robbie Stillwaggon was impressive throughout the weekend, scoring an eighth place finish. Lance Yonge and Jared Zimbardi completed the top-10.
Only four cautions flew during the A-Main. The first was on lap five for a slowing Kramer Williamson. One lap later, Rick Wilson spun in turn two. Just after halfway, Scott Kreutter stopped in turn one, and the final caution came on lap 24 when, as mentioned, Steve Poirier spun to a stop to avoid a spinning Mares Stellfox.
As mentioned, the heavy rains the speedway grounds on Saturday Night were countered Sunday with picture-perfect conditions. Despite the break from Mother Nature, a handful of teams did not return, forcing officials to downsize from three B-Mains to just two.
The postponement allowed Jeff VanDusen to get a backup car to Elbridge, NY, a day after flipping his potent primary mount on the first lap of heat one. As mentioned, Blake Breen also benefited from the extra day.
Three provisionals were given out for the A-Main, one for each of the participating sanctioning bodies. Those using them were Kyle Moffit (ASCS Patriot), Bubby Kerrick (ESS) and Joey Biasi (URC).
