Fuller Rolls To 2nd Super DIRT Week 358-Modified Win At ‘Fast Track’
Elbridge, NY – October 5, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director
Current Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified points leader Tim Fuller continued his supremacy on the Small-Block circuit as he captured his second Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series win Friday at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. Fuller finished second the previous night at Brewerton Speedway after scoring a decisive victory in the lead-off Super DIRT Week satellite event Wednesday at Can-Am Motorsports Park.
Following Fuller at the finish were Brewerton winner Brett Hearn, Vic Coffey in a borrowed ride from Scott Kerwin, final Syracuse ITT-Goulds Pumps 150 qualifier Rich Vinson and second-generation standout Ronnie Johnson. Hearn also chased Fuller across the line last October at RWR in his bid for the $4,000 top prize.
“We’ve had a real fast car, its just been incredible lately,” said Fuller, after parking the potent JL Motorsports no. 19 Street Wise Fighting Gear-G&R Auto Parts/TEO machine in victory lane for the second time in the last three nights. “Its been a blessing having the Lazore family take care of the whole Small-Block deal. That takes away a lot of the pain during Super DIRT Week. Its also a lot of fun just going out there to race and not being on a point hunt for once.”
Fuller was fast right out of the hauler, besting a stellar 49-car field in the Integra Shocks Time Trials with an average lap speed of 21.122 sec. (106.524 mph) around the ultra-tacky 5/8-mile Elbridge oval. The Edwards, N.Y. pilot then returned to win the first of five qualifying heats to help determine the final 31-car starting field. In the customary pre-race draw he selected outside front row to pose an immediate problem for the remaining 30 title race contenders.
And that’s exactly how the century grind ultimately unfolded as Fuller led the entire 100-lap distance after out-dragging pole-sitter Vinson on the initial start and holding back a late race rally by 10th-place starter Hearn. A half-dozen yellow flags were all that slow Fuller on this night as the two-time Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified champion cruised home for his 14th career tour triumph.
“Tim was a little better than we were tonight but in the end I was just trying to keep Vic behind, he was real good on the bottom and we were decent at best,” said runner-up Hearn. Added third-place finisher Coffey, who pulled up alongside Hearn on a number of occasions yet was unable to complete the pass, “We’ve been good at Rolling Wheels lately, just need to get a little better in certain places. Tonight we were the only ones able to run good down low in turns one and two. When everybody wants use the big cushion you gotta try something else or you’re not going to go too far.”
Racing in the Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series resumes for the fourth and final consecutive day during Super DIRT Week. The uncommon quadrupleheader closes out with the headline ITT Corporation-Goulds Pumps 150-lap ‘Salute to the Troops’ Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Series Championship race set for Saturday, Oct. 6 on the Syracuse Mile.
