Hearn, Tomkins Explode for First Wins In Advance Auto Parts ‘Firecracker’ Twin-Bill At Rolling Wheels
Elbridge, NY – July 3, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series PR Director
New Jersey invader Brett Hearn and area favorite Gary Tomkins each scored their first Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series victory of the season as Town Mechanical, Inc. presented the ‘Firecracker Twin 50s’ on Tuesday night at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. Both contracted tour drivers pocketed $3,000 first-place checks and collected automatic starting berths in the prestigious Eckerd 200 Championship race on Oct. 7 of Super DIRT Week XXXVI at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
Hearn led flag-to-flag in the 50-lap opener, out-distancing top rival Danny Johnson by a straightaway en route to extending his all-time high SDS win total to 92 aboard the potent no. 20 Madsen Motorsports-Wentworth Custom Homes-Kruger-WLR/TEO entry. Tomkins battled Chad Brachmann in the nightcap, leading the final 30 circuits around the fast 5/8-miler to earn his 13th career Advance Auto Parts series triumph for the no. 84 Honeoye Auto Parts-Red Parker & Son Excavating/Bicknell team.
The Advance Auto Parts Big-Block Modifieds have just three days to regroup before heading west to Ransomville Speedway for the CWM Chemical/E-Z Oil 100 on Friday, July 6. Touring teams cross the Canadian border for back-to-back-to-back 100-lap series stops at Cornwall, Drummond and Brockville in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec with the rare tripleheader kicking off on Sunday, July 8. All three main events pay $6,000 to the winner with valuable points towards the overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship up for grabs along with guaranteed starting spots in the Eckerd 200 at Syracuse during Super DIRT Week XXXVI on Oct. 7.

Brett Hearn and Gary Tomkins shared victory lane after copping the Advance Auto Parts Series features while the ‘Cobra’ Chuck Hebing dominated the 20-lap Patriot Sprint A-main to score his second victory of the season at RWR. (complete reports for both classes can be found elsewhere in separate stories).
In the Mod-Lites division, Paul Klager won a 15-lap feature taking the lead from Jeff Barker on lap nine. Klager, a Merrittville Speedway regular, commented that this was his first time at Rolling Wheels after making the trip to Central New York, “My boss doesn’t know I took the day off to make the races.”
There were two yellow flags that slowed the feature. On lap five, Lowell Zehr spun off the fourth turn and on lap 10, Andrew Schartner looped in the fourth corner. Both cars were able to return to the race. The top-five finishers behind Klager were Barker, Justin Crisafulli, Mike Hay and Adam Murphy.
The race averaged 65.911 mph for the 15 lap distance on a track that must be like a super-speedway to these little cars. Barker is credited with turning in the fastest lap of 90.667 mph.
In Mid-State Vintage racing there were two features run, one for the 50’s and 60’s models and the final 10-lapper for the 70’s cars.
In the 50’s/60’s 10-lap main, Gordy Wood and Shirley Morden swapped the lead back and forth several times once she caught Wood on lap four. As these two went at it at the front, Matt Scott was closing in on the lead duo. Scott faltered on lap nine, almost spinning around in between the third and fourth turns, allowing the front two to battle for the victory. The battle ended with Morden taking the checkers first followed by Wood. Both went to victory lane as Morden represented the 60’s class and Wood the 50’s division.
The 70’s Mid-State Vintage feature was also highlighted by a three-car battle at the front, between Ally Amell, Rich Applebee and Bill Klisslstein. Applebee was able to pass Amell for the lead on lap six and come home the winner. Amell finished second followed by Klisslstein to round out the final top-three finishers.
