Hefti Captures Rolling Wheels Sportsman
Special, Tech Sorts Out Top-Five ELBRIDGE, N.Y. (July 4) – Russ Hefti from nearby Jordan, NY, made it two Sportsman feature wins in a row at the “Fast Track”, Rolling Wheels Raceway, by winning the annual Independence Day 20-lap special. The highlight of the holiday event, the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series for DIRT Modifieds, will be featured elsewhere in this publication. That 100-lapper was won by Tim Fuller. On hand for the first time in 2005 were the popular Mini-Mods with Tim Devendorf taking the 15-lap feature victory. In the 20-lap Sportsman main, Scott Schrader jumped out into the lead at the drop of starter Matt Burdick’s green flag. Schrader was able to hold back Kevin Bates and Hefti for just four circuits, when he suddenly slowed exiting the second turn and pulled off to the infield. This move also slowed Bates and allowed Hefti to pass on the far outside and take the lead. Once out front Hefti was able to pull Bates down the straight-aways. Dan Wiesner moved into third and started to close in on Bates. On lap 10 the racing all came to a stand still when the yellow flew for Josh Hefti, who had spun out in the second turn. The running order remained the same on the ensuing restart before Mark Potter made a run down low on the Wiesner car and completed the pass. The green lights remained out for the rest of the event with Hefti taking the win. Bates, Potter, Brett Tonkin and Wiesner, rounded out the top-five, or so it seemed. During post-race inspection both the Bates car and the Tonkin car were deemed to have illegal distributors and both disqualified, yet neither finished last. Following post-race inspection the top-five looked like: Hefti, Potter, Wiesner, Loren Lincoln and Ridley. The 15-lap Mini-Mod main ran off with a number of top contenders dropping by the wayside due to mechanical woes. Following a back-and-forth battle for the lead, both Doug Williams and Steve Miller settled into this running order. The first yellow flew on lap eight when fifth-place runner D.J. Forbes looped his car in the third turn. The restart produced yet another yellow when second-place Williams slowed on the track. From that point on the race remained green. Tim Devendorf, Steve Miller, Lowell Zehr, John Behron and Rocco Leone all secured top-five finishes. Big-block Modified and Sportsman teams return to action at Rolling Wheels on Labor Day, Sept. 5. Also on hand that night will be the Street Stocks. The next special event at the 'Fast Track' is scheduled for Tue., Aug. 16 when the World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series makes its long awaited debut with DIRT Pro Stocks filling out the first Full-Fender Frenzy. The DIRT MotorSports™ Advance Auto Parts Modified Series is brought to fans across the Northeast by several sponsors and partners, including series sponsors Advance Auto Parts, Dynomax Performance Exhaust, Hoosier Racing Tire and Sunoco Race Fuels. Promotional Partners include Stacker 2®, AMB i.t., RACEceiver, Zippo Lighters and F.X. ROLLING WHEELS
SPORTSMAN CLARIFICATION The family of Joe Williams wants their fans and friends to know that Joe did not initiate the last lap incident in the third turn at Rolling Wheels Raceway on July 4. He was a victim of an accident caused by the other driver involved. They furthermore want to clarify that the physical contact in the pits following the accident was unintentional. Their pit crew member was just flailing his arms and made contact with a DIRT Official. |
