Susice Wins Sportsman Feature

Susice Captures Rain-Delayed RWR World Series Sportsman Special

Elbridge, NY – October 10, 2009 – By Dave Medler, DIRTcar Racing Northeast Series Correspondent

After a rough outing earlier Saturday during Super DIRT Week at the New York State Fairgrounds the already qualified Sportsman teams headed west to Rolling Wheels Raceway Park to complete their series race that fell victim to rain after qualifying back in September.

After 30 caution-free laps round the spacious 5/8-miler, Ryan Susice out of Ransomville, NY picked up the victory, his third in the last five tour stops. For Susice it was his first ever Rolling Wheels win, yet more importantly it tightened up the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman points battle with reigning champ and current leader Chris Raabe.

"It’s been a long time coming, I’m so proud of the whole crew," said Susice, after exiting his Investors Service Company No.38k Bicknell mount. "We came straight from Syracuse where we had a good run (3rd), threw the other car in the trailer, and never really changed a thing. I came here with the Can-Am set-up that got rained out. I owe it all to my crew."

Jipp Ortiz out-raced Dan Wiesner to the first turn and immediately opened up a four car-length advantage as the 30 lapper got underway. While Ortiz was out front, Susice moved into the runner-up slot on lap three and took off after the leader.

With five laps reading on the scoreboard the Ransomville ridge runners maintained an advantage over Wiesner, Tim Sears Jr. and Don Spatorico who ran a distant third through fifth.

At the 10 lap mark Susice was still hounding Ortiz for the lead. Ortiz held his line as he fought off Susice, Sears, Wiesner and Spatorico in the top-five.

After running the top trying to find a way around Ortiz, on lap 14 Susice went to the bottom as he shot into the lead exiting turn four.

By lap 20 Susice was on rails building up a 3.0-second lead ahead of Ortiz while Wiesner, Sears and Spatorico continued their tight battle behind the top two.

With five laps to go Susice was still dominating, Ortiz ran alone in 2nd, Spatorico, Wiesner and Series point leader Chris Raabe held down third through fifth.

Over the remaining laps Susice made quick work of lapped traffic to win by 3 seconds with Ortiz, Spatorico, Raabe and Wiesner completing the front-five. Alan Fink, Billy Clark Jr., Jesse Cotriss, Justin Wright and Sammy Reakes IV rounded out the top-ten.
